Ultimate Guide to Rajamangala Stadium, Bangkok: Essential Tips for First-Time Concert Goers
I experienced my first-ever Coldplay concert in Bangkok, and it was nothing short of amazing.
Held at Rajamangala National Stadium, this venue hosts everything from international sports events to mega concerts. If you’re planning on watching a concert or any other event for the first time at Rajamangala Stadium soon, here’s everything you need to know to ensure an unforgettable experience.
Rajamangala National Stadium, Bangkok
Located in the Hua Mak area of Bangkok’s Bang Kapi district, Rajamangala Stadium is Thailand’s largest stadium, with a seating capacity of around 50,000. It primarily serves as the home ground for the Thailand national football team but has also become a hotspot for large-scale concerts featuring international and local artists.
Address: 286 Soi Ramkhamhaeng 24 Yaek 18, Hua Mak, Bang Kapi District, Bangkok 10240
Getting There
Motorcycle
One of the best ways to navigate the busy streets of Bangkok on event day is by motorcycle. The area can get really busy on the day of a big event, so expect heavy traffic. If you are in a hurry and don’t want to get stuck on the road, you can choose to get a motorcycle from your hotel. The fare varies depending on where you are coming from, but expect drivers to demand a slightly higher amount and be ready to negotiate. There are plenty of motorcycles in Bangkok, so you will not have difficulty finding one.
Cost: >50 THB
Taxi or Grab
Another option is to take a taxi or Grab, both of which are relatively cheap depending on the distance from your hotel. Grab is a ride-hailing service app that also offers food delivery and more. Think Uber, but in Asia. There’s GrabCar, GrabTaxi, GrabFood—you get the idea. It is a very convenient option. Just install the app on your phone, register, and book a ride.
Taxis are also plentiful in Bangkok. Ensure the driver uses the meter, or negotiate a fare beforehand.
Cost: Depending on traffic and starting location, expect to pay around 150-300 THB ($5-10 USD).
By Public Transport
Bangkok’s train and bus systems are also very convenient. To get there by train, take the BTS to Phaya Thai Station, then transfer to the Airport Rail Link and get off at Ramkhamhaeng Station. From there, you can take a short taxi ride to the stadium.
Several buses pass near the stadium as well, including routes 22, 40, 60, and 71. However, as mentioned earlier, this mode of transportation can be slow due to traffic congestion.
Rent a Car
You can choose to arrange this beforehand. Big concerts or artists with large fanbases often have group transportation arranged by fans, and they frequently look for passengers to share the rental cost. Typically, these are groups coming from the same location. This is very convenient and provides a nice venue to meet new people. You can find them on Facebook groups, Reddit, and other social apps.
Cost: This depends on the vehicle’s capacity and your negotiation with the driver. For a van of maybe 8-10 passengers, the cost could be 100-200 THB per person.
What to Bring
Your concert ticket! Keep it safe and accessible. Ensure everything on it is readable.
For foreigners, always carry identification. The safest option is your passport, especially if the concert requires age verification.
Wear comfortable clothing and bring a change of clothes if you want. Bangkok can be hot and humid, so dress lightly. If the concert is in the evening, a light jacket might be useful. If you arrive early, you can also buy shirts and other merchandise that can serve as souvenirs.
Bring a portable charger or charge your phone fully before going to the venue. Ensure your phone stays charged for photos and navigation.
Bring a water bottle if they are allowed. It’s important to stay hydrated, but double-check the concert policy first. For example, Coldplay’s promotional materials indicated it was okay to bring water bottles, but on-site, we were told they were not allowed.
Other stuff that I brought with me to the stadium:
- Handkerchief or small quick dry towel – Useful for wiping sweat in the humid climate.
- Cooling spray and cooling powder. These were lifesavers during my entire stay in Bangkok. You can get them at any pharmacy or most souvenir shops.
Planning is key
Plan your transportation, beat the traffic and settle in without a rush. Be prepared for security checks at the gates. Prohibited items include large bags, professional cameras, and outside food or drinks. These rules are strictly enforced, so it’s better to eat and fill up before you enter.
There are numerous food stalls inside the stadium offering a variety of snacks and beverages. Prices are higher than outside, so bring extra cash. Restrooms are available throughout the stadium, but expect lines.
Spend some time on the grounds and shop for official concert merchandise. These items sell out early, so it’s better to get yours as soon as possible. In our case, shirt sizes ran out quickly, and we weren’t able to get any.
Also, arrange your return transportation beforehand. With a crowd of concert-goers and heavy traffic, navigating your way home can be difficult.
Coordinate well
Before you enter stadium, coordinate with your friends and companions about meeting points and times. Mobile signals can be weak with large crowds, so establish a plan in advance. During the first half of the concert, we experienced weak signals and couldn’t communicate to meet outside for snacks.
Safety first
Enjoy the show but always be aware of your surroundings. When you get there early, take some time to know the locations of first aid stations, police stations, and emergency exits. Keep an eye on your belongings or wear a belt bag under your shirt.
Enjoy the Local Scene
Post-concert, explore nearby areas. Ramkhamhaeng is known for its night markets and street food, perfect for a late-night snack.
