12 Must-Have Travel Safety Items For a Worry Free Trip

Traveling is a great way to explore new places and make lasting memories with family and friends, but it’s important to stay safe while you’re on the go. Travel safety items are essential for exploring new places and making lasting memories with family and friends while staying secure on the go. For first-time or infrequent travelers, safety is often overlooked in the excitement and rush of planning. Luckily, there are many useful travel safety items that can help keep you secure. In this blog post, we’ll go over some must-have travel safety items to give you peace of mind during your trips.

RFID Blocking Wallet or Passport Holder

Protect your sensitive information from “skimming” or digital theft with an RFID blocking wallet or passport holder. How does this work? With modern cards allowing ‘tap to pay,’ criminals can easily use scanners to steal your card or passport info by skimming their radio frequency. They simply have to get close enough to where you keep your card or passport and be able to discreetly scan them.

To protect against this, you can use a wallet or passport cover with RFID blocking technology. If you prefer, you can also use small sleeves to cover individual cards for added security. These products prevent thieves from scanning your credit cards, passport, and other electronic devices without your knowledge, keeping your personal data safe and secure.

Portable Door Lock

Whether you’re staying in a hotel, hostel, or Airbnb, a portable door lock provides an extra layer of security and peace of mind. Easy to install and compact enough to fit in your luggage, these devices prevent unauthorized entry into your room, ensuring a good night’s sleep wherever you go.

Door Stoppers

A doorstopper is a cheap and easy travel safety item that’s worth packing. Just wedge it under any inward-opening door to stop it from being opened. It’s great for extra security, especially in hotels or Airbnbs where others may have a key or know the door code, giving you peace of mind while you sleep.

I always bring this when staying at hotels and traveling solo. It doesn’t add too much weight to your luggage so there’s really no reason to skip bringing this with you when you travel.

Travel Insurance

This ranks high on my travel safety items list. While not a physical product, travel insurance is a vital investment for any traveler. From medical emergencies to trip cancellations and lost luggage, travel insurance provides financial protection and assistance when unexpected events occur. Be sure to choose a comprehensive policy that covers your specific needs and destination.

Personal Safety Alarm

In case of an emergency or threatening situation, a personal safety alarm can attract attention and deter potential attackers. These compact devices emit a loud, piercing sound when activated, alerting nearby individuals and increasing your chances of getting help quickly.

This is a very helpful gift for female travelers that you know. I have one of these stuck to my bag like a keychain or sometimes attached to my mobile phone when I’m going to crowded places.

A more basic alternative to this is a travel whistle. It still does the job and can help you get immediate help in case of emergencies.

Portable Safe

Keep your valuables secure while you’re out exploring with a portable travel safe. These lightweight, slash-resistant safes are ideal for storing cash, passports, smartphones, and other valuables while you’re at the beach, hiking trails, or exploring crowded tourist attractions.

This is really intended for those who travel slow and stay in rentals for a month or more, a portable safe provides extra peace of mind by protecting your belongings while you’re away for the day. But even if you’re on a shorter trip, these compact safes are easy to bring along.

Emergency First Aid Kit

You can never tell when accidents and injuries can happen, so it’s essential to have a compact first aid kit on hand. I always include essentials such as bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, stomach pain meds, and antihistamines.

I’ve had a very bad case of allergy once in Singapore and I didn’t have any allergy medicine with me. It was in the middle of the night and convenience stores near my hotel didn’t have any either. So if you have allergies, any maintenance medicines, it’s always best to have them on your kit.

Look for a travel-sized kit that includes essentials plus other extra emergency items tourniquets, trauma pads, extra wraps, and medical tape to treat minor injuries and ailments while on the go.

Water Purification System

If you are going hiking or going some place where clean water is inaccessible, this travel safety item is a must. Ensure access to clean, safe drinking water wherever you travel with a portable water purification system. From water filtration bottles to purification tablets and UV sterilizers, these products remove harmful bacteria and contaminants, allowing you to stay hydrated and healthy during your adventures.

Trackers

For added security and peace of mind, consider investing in a GPS tracker that allows you to keep tabs on your belongings or loved ones while traveling. These devices use satellite technology to provide real-time tracking and location updates, making it easier to recover lost or stolen items and stay connected with family and friends.

The most popular is the Apple AirTag but there are other alternatives out there. Place them in your checked luggage, children, pets, and anything else that is important to you. This way you can track your belongings (and loved ones!) better than the airline can.

Dummy Wallets

If you’re traveling to areas known for pickpockets or high crime rates, carrying a fake or dummy wallet can be a smart safety measure. A dummy wallet is something you can easily hand over if you’re ever in a situation where you’re being robbed, allowing you to escape quickly without losing important valuables.

Mine is usually filled with small amount of loose change, a few low-value bills, and some old receipts to make it look convincing. Keep this decoy wallet in a more obvious or accessible spot, while hiding your real valuables in a secure location.

Money Belt Bag

This is probably one of my favorites in this travel safety items list. Aside from a body bag or hand bag, I wear a belt bag on me when I go on tours, concerts, or shopping at a crowded marketplace. I wear it underneath my shirt or jacket and contains my money, cards, passport, and other identifications.

All my cards, passport, and IDs still have the RFID sleeves though so nobody can steal my info when somebody comes close to me.

Anti-theft Bag

Anti-theft bags help protect your belongings in busy, high-risk areas like markets, subways, or tourist attractions. With lockable zippers, hidden compartments, and slash-proof material, anti-theft bags make it much harder for pickpockets or thieves to access your valuables. There are many anti-theft bags on the market, you just have to pick the features that you prefer to have base on your needs.

These are just a few travel safety items that I think will be helpful for first time or infrequent travelers. By investing in these travel safety items, you can enjoy your adventures with confidence, knowing that you’re prepared for whatever challenges may arise.
